While the name ALEC is more likely to bring to mind a suave eligible bachelor than an an ultra-conservative lobbying group, Fight for Philly is nonetheless urging Comcast to dump ALEC.
In addition to being a questionable corporate citizen here in Philadelphia, Comcast is also a dues-paying member of the American Legislative Executive Council (ALEC).
- ALEC helps Comcast and other big corporations gain major tax loopholes for big industries and the super-rich.
- ALEC coordinates laws like the one protecting Trayvon Martin’s killer, plus laws like Pennsylvania’s recently enacted Voter ID – which makes it harder for people to vote.
- ALEC is also a force behind the horrible PA state budget, creating more inequality by giving tax breaks for rich corporations and cutting schools, assistance and housing for the rest of us.
Because of awful initiatives like these, many major companies and legislators have already dumped ALEC, and Comcast should, too.
Fight for Philly will be delivering a petition to Comcast at its annual shareholders’ meeting in Philadelphia on May 31 at 9AM.
